The Tangible Benefits of Music and Creativity in Schools

Through our workshops and training, O-Music have over the years visited many, many schools. The common thread we notice with those that have music and creativity at the heart of school life is the positive atmosphere, the overall confidence of the students, and happiness.

It may seem simplistic, but there is a difference between having a music event once and while or it being at the core of what a school provides for ALL students.

Westbourne Primary School (Sutton) alongside Dulwich Hamlet Primary (SE London) and Farley Hill Primary (Reading) are examples of schools Marcel has worked at for more than 16 years. The consistent role of music and creativity in school life and the support from management for the teachers to provide opportunities in all its forms, is very apparent.

The video is an extract from a Westbourne Primary song-writing day. Each year the Year 6 use O-Generator to compose their songs. What strikes us every year, is the engagement of every student. Even those who fear performing. The support from the class is without question genuinely there. O-Generator plays just a small part of what each school views as being important. Laughter, fun, expression, but all the time learning. We love that they have this commitment. We are delighted, and privileged that O-Generator plays a role in this.

These schools and many of the schools Marcel has worked at are an illustration that Creativity and Music should not be seen as a luxury or added extra, but something that students should have access to as a fundamental part of their education.
